Laboratory Maintenance Assistant - (The Walter Reed Project)-Job Vacancy in Kericho Kenya


The US Army Medical Research Unit-Kenya (USAMRU-K) / Henry Jackson Foundation for Medical Research International (HJF MRI) ‘The Walter Reed Project’ HIV Program - Kericho is seeking to fill the position below.

The HIV Program carries out HIV AIDS vaccine and therapeutic research studies and supports HIV prevention, care and treatment programs in southern Rift Valley.

Laboratory Maintenance Assistant

Job summary:

Maintain all laboratory equipment to meet required standards. This will include installation, calibration, repairs and routine maintenance.

The officer in this position will be expected to spend at least 33% of his/her time giving support to laboratories at the PEPFAR partner sites.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in servicing and repairing laboratory equipment in Kericho and at the PEPFAR partner sites.
  • Operate and maintain the Liquid Nitrogen plant.
  • Ensure that the laboratory is adequately supplied with water and electricity at all times.
  • Repair and maintain electricity plugs and cables.
  • Ensure that all generators are duly serviced and have sufficient fuel all the time.
  • Ensure that fire extinguishers are placed in strategic points and are in good working condition.
  • Ensure that the fire alarm system and emergency exits are operating well all the time.
  • Uphold adherence to prescribed safety standards by self as well as by external maintenance persons/teams.
  • Submit maintenance charts weekly/monthly /annually or as required.
  • Assist in the development of equipment maintenance SOPs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance of freezers, fridges and air conditioners.
  • Perform other relevant duties assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Diploma in medical engineering from a recognized institution.
  • At least five years working experience in a busy medical laboratory. Preference will be given to applicants who have served in a medical research laboratory.
  • Must have ability to maintain and repair freezers and fridges.
