The ICRC Somalia Delegation in Nairobi is seeking for two experienced and highly motivated persons to fill the following positions:

1 Agronomist and 1 Veterinary Field Officer – ECOSEC Department

Job Profile:

The Agronomist and the Veterinary Field Officers will form part of the team working under the supervision of the EcoSec Coordinator.

The incumbents will be responsible to provide advice, as well as to support the Delegation’s strategies on diverse issues related to the implementation and monitoring of agricultural and veterinary projects in Somalia.

These duties require an in-depth knowledge of the main features of the agricultural system as well as the social, political and economic context of Somalia.

Responsibilities:
  • He/she will be based in Somalia and work within the frame of the Economic Security Department approach and of the wider delegation strategy for Somalia, in close collaboration with the EcoSec Delegate; regular reporting visit to the Delegation in Nairobi;
  • He/she will work in close collaboration with the Regional ICRC Field Officers based in the different regions of Somalia;
  • He/she will contribute with collection and analysis of data gathered and in the field;
  • He/she will assist the EcoSec delegate and will report upon the issues assigned by the Department;
  • He/she will contribute to the assessments, design, implementation and monitoring of agro and veterinary programs and, more generally, of economic security programs;
  • He/she will contribute to the Delegation internal reporting.
Minimum requirements:
  • For the Agronomist: University degree in Agriculture;
  • For the Veterinary: University degree in Veterinary Medicine;
  • For both positions: Somali nationality and passport;
  • At least 2 years of work experience in agronomical and veterinary programs implemented in Somalia; former experience with humanitarian organisations is an asset;
  • Relevant professional experience in designing, implementing and monitoring agricultural/veterinary programs;
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills;
  • Excellent computer skills; fully conversant with MS Office applications;
  • Excellent knowledge of English and Somali language;
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel extensively in Somalia and to spend long periods in the field.
Other requirements:
  • Good organizational and analytical skills;
  • Good interpersonal, reporting and writing skills;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.

The Person

We require a candidate with the following minimum qualifications:
  • Diploma in medical imaging sciences and a certificate in ultrasound imaging from a recognized institution;
  • Certification by the Radiation Protection Board;
  • Registration as a member of Society of Radiographers (SORK) ; and
  • At least 3 years continuous hands-on experience in ultrasonography.

  • Initiating purchases of motor vehicle spare parts required for repairs;
  • Observing and complying with environmental, health and safety measures and regulations.

Animal Production Specialist-(VSF Belgium )- Job in Rumbek, Lakes State Sudan

In East Africa, our programmes focus on community based animal health services, capacity building of local institutions and governments, conflict mitigation and sustainable natural resource management.

Role

The Animal production specialist will be responsible of enhancing the refinement of the animal health and production system in order to develop a sustainable system of access to sufficiently advice on animal health as well as livestock production and productivity, he or she will be in charge of implementation of the animal health and production activities of the project in accordance with project documents, work plans and budgets.

He or she will support the establishment of private animal health delivery services and linkages of CAHW Associations and regularly monitor the progress and performance of the project animal health workers activities. The Animal production specialist reports to the Project Manager.

Context

VSF B is looking to recruit a highly motivated individual with an affinity for livestock and the ability to get along with the community, rural owners, who will establish, promote and strengthen community based animal health structures as well as value addition to livestock and livestock products in collaboration with the Project manager, Assistant project manager marketing officer and other relevant stakeholders.

Main Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with the relevant stakeholders in all districts to ensure government monitoring of the CAHWs result areas..
  • Ensure programme implementation in accordance with VSF-B and GoSS livestock standards and guidelines.
  • Conduct livestock project needs assessments, and baseline surveys in the livestock based livelihoods.
  • Carry out animal health training for all cadres of animal health workers as defined in the project documents, and report accordingly.
  • Develop and submit to the project manager training reports, after activity reports, and Officer’s monthly reports effectively.
  • Carry out community meetings and workshops together with ABCD community organizers.
  • Provide advice to CAHWs and motivate them to stock adequate veterinary inputs in their private stock shops.
  • Monitor and supervise community based animal health structures and provide regular trainings to CAHWs in the project target areas.
  • Advice and train farmers on value addition packages for livestock and livestock products
  • Responsible and accountable for all VSFB Project resources while in the field location.
  • Ensure the proper control and store keeping of project input and resources.
  • Ensure prudent use and reporting of field advance finances.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with community, local authorities & other Agencies on the ground.
  • Responsible to the beneficiaries to have their views incorporated in all plans and activities.
  • Ensure the CAHW monitoring structure and tools are developed and used in monitoring animal health workers and their associational activities.
  • Collect CAHWs data in the prescribed formats for monthly reports.
  • Provide assessment report and situation reports from Field location.
  • Regular and timely reporting to the project Manager.
  • Ensure the target groups and members activities are monitored and the necessary advise given and documented.
Essential or Minimum Requirements

Education
  • Degree in Veterinary science, livestock production and relevant qualification in animal health
  • Diploma in community development, Social studies, supplies management or logistics is an added advantage.
Knowledge and experience
  • At least four years experience in the animal husbandry and livestock medicine in pastoral regions.
  • Qualification and experience in Community development will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge of Pastoral field schools will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge of the Guidelines on CAHW training and support.
  • work experience in busy livestock related emergency projects
  • Experience in working in ASAL environment in East Africa or pastoralists environment
  • Working experience with an NGO/Government institution or private sector will be an added advantage.

The Position:

Gem Fish / Honey / Poultry Farmers Co-operative Society Limited seeks to jointly recruit aManager who shall be based at the Yala Market Service Centre (MSC) and responsible for planning, management, implementation and monitoring of all societies activities in its area of operation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • KCSE C+ and above.
  • At least 3 years field experience working in an active farmer’s community cooperative society or related field in Kenya.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili. Knowledge of local language will be an added advantage.
  • Proficiency in computer (Word, Excel, Access) and MIS (Management Information Systems).
  • Knowledge on value addition.
  • Knowledge on food processing/handling of fish, honey and poultry.
  • Should be aged between 25-40 years.

Background:

VSF Germany is an international Non Governmental Organization, providing humanitarian aid and development assistance to pastoralists and vulnerable communities in areas where livestock is of importance. In the region, VSF Germany implements activities in southern Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

With support in animal health, agriculture, marketing, food safety but also with developing the capacity of communities and governmental institutions or initiating peace and conflict resolution we work towards food security and strengthened livelihoods of pastoralist communities.

VSF Germany seeks to recruit two qualified and well experiencedField Monitors (Specialized or with experience in Veterinary services) to support the implementation of projects one will be based in Lokichoggio and the other in Marsabit, Northern Kenya. These positions are Field based.

Key responsibilities: 
  • Assist in collecting information and disseminating the same on the natural resources, drought preparedness, livestock diseases and livestock marketing & trade component.
  • Permanently monitor activities in the community and report to the Field Veterinarian. 
  • Assist in mobilizing livestock traders for meetings.
  • Collect data on animal de-worming, vaccination campaigns, livestock and market access. 
  • Monitor the veterinary activities within the Community in close collaboration with the implementing partners. 
  • Assist in Mobilizing livestock traders for meetings 
  • Co-ordinate and closely monitor the implementation of the Activities in the community. 
  • Monitor and review all required and relevant records at the Community level, to ensure that they are accurately prepared and submitted in a timely manner. 
  • Oversee the management of Vaccines and other medicines in the camp and Community ensuring proper standards of storage and utilization are being observed. 
  • Follow up to ensure that the Field Officers are submitting the data forms accurately filled and promptly. 
  • Prepare and submit weekly reports on the Veterinary activities in the Community.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills required 
  • Diploma in Animal Health or its equivalent. 
  • At least 2 years of community work experience. 
  • Past Veterinary work Experience is desirable. 
  • Past experience in the same position or in community work/mobilization preferably with a humanitarian or International NGO in area of Veterinary. 
  • Good Interpersonal communication skills 
  • Ability to understand and speak the local language. 
  • Previous field level experience desirable. 
  • A team player with good organizational skills.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development.

ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

ILRI also manages the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub at ILRI, a new centre for excellence in modern plant and animal biology in Africa. BecA is an initiative developed within the framework of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD)/ African Union African Biosciences initiative. 

It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region. The BecA Hub facilities are world class, including a range of molecular, plant transformation, and genomics laboratories and equipment (e.g. 454 sequencing, Biosafety level 3 laboratory, plant growth facilities). 

The Hub hosts and conducts research in crop, microbe and livestock areas where new developments in science offer promise to address previously intractable problems constraining Africa’s development. Capacity building is a major goal of all activities. 

The scope covers agriculture and food security and their intersections with human health and nutrition, and the sustainable use of Africa’s natural resources.

The BecA Hub seeks to recruit a Crop Molecular Breeder whose focus will be the development and/or validation and application of marker-assisted germplasm enhancement with a focus on major constraints of importance in African agriculture.

This includes genetic mapping, marker validation, MAS implementation using high-throughput genotyping systems plus training and technical backstopping of NARS partners in the region. This is an international appointment reporting to the BecA Hub Director.

Experience in any of the following areas will be considered an asset: 
  • Knowledge of component trait analysis;
  • Molecular breeding simulation and decision support tools;
  • Double haploid and other rapid crop improvement technologies;
  • Applying biotechnologies in developing countries;
  • Quantitative phenotyping of a range of agronomic traits;
  • Biometric and bioinformatics analyses.
Essential Skills and Qualifications will include: 
  • Ph.D. degree in plant genetics, molecular biology and/or plant breeding;
  • Familiarity with large-scale germplasm collections and field breeding programs and a strong background in quantitative genetics;
  • Experience in high throughput genotyping system;
  • Knowledge of SSR, SNP and gene-based marker development, validation and application;
  • Application of MASn plant breeding.
  • Interest in international agricultural research and development;
  • Ability to work well as part of multidisciplinary teams;
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English language.
Terms of appointment: The position is Scientist/Research Level 5A and is on a 3 year fixed term appointment.
