Research Associate / Case Writer - (The Aga Khan University African Management Case Centre)-Job in Nairobi Kenya

Applications are invited from appropriately qualified candidates for the position of Research Associate / Case Writer in the African Management Case Centre (AMCC).

The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, for a period of 12 months,with an option to renew the contract.

Summary:

Responding to the need for intellectual resources and capacities which grow out of African experiences, while also reflecting global best practices, the Aga Khan University (AKU) is establishing the African Management Case Centre to undertake research, analyze and document the experiences of African enterprises and initiatives to develop original content and create African-based capacities in case writing and pedagogy.

The Centre will serve not only as a university wide resource, but also have a mandate to foster case method practice in schools across Africa and the developing world more broadly.

This initiative is part of a wider expansion of AKU that includes the establishment of East Africa’s first regional university, with a purpose–built prinicipal campus in Arusha, Tanzania and the development of six graduate professional schools that will foster creative and ethical leadership, professionalism and broad-based capacities in the fields critical to developing economies.

AKU is establishing the centre initially under the joint aegis of its Graduate School of Media and Communications and Graduate School of Management, addressing the needs of other graduate professional schools as they are developed.

Reporting to the Project Director, the Research Associate will be a key member of a Nairobi-based team working on the development of cases and other intellectual capital in collaboration with international partners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Research, develop and write cases and course materials with faculty guidance on developing world subjects, usually in print, though sometimes using multimedia elements such as web-based video 
  • Gather and analyze data through field interviews and library research, preparing text as well as charts, graphs, and tables as appropriate
  • Identify opportunities and channels to publicize the case centre and its educational materials to a variety of constituents in multiple venues including events, digital and print
Requirements:
  • Strong writing and academic research skills, as well as excellent analytical, communication, and interviewing skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, in a high pressure, deadline oriented environment
  • Capacity to be flexible, adaptable, and to multitask, focus, and write quickly and effectively
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively and independently at the highest level of academic rigor, while establishing strong working relationships and taking direction from one or more project leaders/faculty/editors
  • Comfortable both in an academic setting and with top corporate executives and business norms
  • Travel, both domestic and international, may be necessary
  • Masters degree in Journalism/Media/Communications/Business or equivalent, an Undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts and 2-3 years of related experience

Main duties will include

Qualifications
  • A Degree in Administration/Business/Commerce with sales and customer care experience and management of a busy office.
  • Those with a Diploma in sales plus significant experience in managing programs or clients shall also be considered.
Skill, Knowledge and Competencies required
  • Knowledge of the Consulting and Executive Training Industry in Kenya and East Africa.
  • Demonstrable track record of managing a busy customer portfolio, executive and training calendar.

Remuneration

A competitive package will be offered for the right candidates.

The Proposed Umma University is sponsored by Africa Muslims Agency (AMA), an international organization operating in Kenya.

AMA was registered in Kenya in 1992 as a Non-Governmental organization, under the NGO Act.

AMA’s goals include the establishment, management and support of education related projects, such as the proposed university.

The precursor of the University, Thika College of Shariah and Islamic Studies (TCSIS) was registered by the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in 2001.

In 2007, its Diploma programmes in Islamic studies were validated by the Commission for Higher Education (CHE).

In 2008, the College was granted authority by CHE to collaborate with International University of Africa (IUA), Khartoum, Sudan in offering bachelors degree programmes in Islamic Studies.

With the University education experience from collaboration between IUA and TCSIS, the
idea to establish the proposed Umma University started in 2009.

In its portfolio of academic programmes, the University will initially have five faculties two of which are already in existence.

1. Vice Chancellor

The Vice Chancellor’s position is the most senior position in the University administration. Overall, the Vice Chancellor provides strategic leadership, cultivates networking and strategic alliances with key stakeholders and partners and is responsible to the University Council
for the management of the institution.

The Vice Chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer of the university and has overall responsibility
for academic and administrative leadership. The Vice Chancellor is expected to develop educational frameworks and policies and take ownership of the first five years of the University’s Strategic Plan in order to achieve its set strategic goals.

Qualifications

General Terms and Conditions

Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Biomedical Engineer, Engineers and Architect - Kenyatta University Teaching, Research & Referral Hospital-jobs in Kenya


Kenyatta University Teaching, Research & Referral Hospital

Kenyatta University intends to build a 600-bed capacity state of the art University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital. It will be a fully fledged University Hospital.

The construction project will take three (3) years and covers the construction of the Hospital and Medical School. It will have an Oncology and Geriatric Units and a Dental school.

We therefore wish to employ highly qualified persons who will form a team of inhouse experts to help supervise the development of physical infrastructure.

1. Project Manager

The applicants must be holders of a Degree in Building Economics / Quantity Surveying / Construction Management / Architecture or Civil Engineering.

In addition the applicants must have:
  • Evidence of registration to relevant professional bodies and three (3) years post-registration experience in a project management capacity including a multi-billion project, and all aspects of project process, development and execution.
  • Computer literacy and strong familiarity with project management software, such as Microsoft project, Primavera and reporting Software programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in Personnel Management.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Post-graduate qualification will be added advantage.
The project manager will be employed within a design-and build contract arrangement for the proposed Referral and Teaching Hospital for Kenyatta University.

He/she will be deployed as the Principal Site-based Representative of the Project Implementation Committee which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor.

In addition, the applicant will be required:
  • To track and report on the planning of the implementation plan for the hospital by the contractor.
  • To establish and run the Site-based Project Management Office.
  • Develop and implement project communication and reporting strategy and plans including communication formats and templates.

  • Have a minimum of three (3) years post registration working experience in a consultancy firm or a large construction firm.
The duties of the applicant will include among other things:
  • The preparation of Bills of Quantities and schedules of materials, labour and services required in the construction and equipment.
  • The preparation and valuation of works and preparation of progress reports.
3. Biomedical Engineer

The applicants must be holders of a Degree in Medical Engineering or Higher National Diploma in the related field from a recognized institution.

In addition the applicant must:
  • Have at least five (5) years working experience heading a maintenance function in a busy institution or hospital.
  • Be registered with the relevant professional board.
  • Have a proven track record in Energy Management, Maintenance Management and Operational Costs Control.
The work will be carried out in different stages from design stage through the commissioning of the project.

The duties of applicants will include the following:-
  • To be in-charge of verifying that the following processes are well specified: work, process, patients, staff and equipments flow and area sizing.
  • Identification of the necessary supplies to the units.
  • Ensuring technical specification for all the equipments are developed as the client’s needs.
  • To assist in the tendering, sourcing and delivery verification and inspection of equipments.
  • Installation, testing and commissioning.
  • To be responsible for medical gases and biomedical incineration, distribution and design requirements.
4. Civil / Structural Engineer

Applicants must be holders of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

In addition the applicant must:
  • Be a registered engineer with Engineers Registration Board of Kenya or a member of a recognized professional body.
  • Have at least three (3) years post registration work experience in the construction industry.
The duties of the applicant will include:
  • Design and production of Structural and Civil working drawings for projects.
  • Supervision of Projects from inception to completion.
  • Submission of Structural drawings to relevant authorities.
5. Mechanical Engineer (Building Services)

Applicants must be holders of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Building Services) or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.

  • Be registered with a relevant professional body.
  • Have at least three (3) years post registration work experience in a consulting or construction firm.
The duties of the applicant will include:
  • Preparation and valuation of Mechanical work and prepare progress reports.

6. Architect

Applicants must be holders of a Degree in Architecture from a recognized University.

They should also have at least three (3) years post registration practical experience with a reputable organization or Government.

The applicant will be required to carry out the following duties:
  • To prepare designs and produce drawings of building projects in the University constructions programmes as well as, undertake supervision of these projects during construction.
  • To supervise projects from inception to completion.
  • To submit drawings to relevant authorities.
The applicants should be registered by the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors of Kenya and be a member of a recognized professional body.

Terms of Service:

The terms of service for the above posts include a renewable contract of two (2) years which is subject to satisfactory work performance, a generous medical scheme, a house allowance and a commuting allowance. Gratuity will be given at the end of the contract.
