This is an exciting new position that will blaze a trail for new journalism at Nation Media Group. 

The NMG Social Media Editor will recognise that the new consumer of news and information does not merely want to be served the end product, but would rather participate in producing it. 

Specifically, s/he will:
  • Track comments about NMG’s journalism on blogs, websites, and social media, for trends, ideas and issues of importance, and to translate these into stories and draw insights to guide editors;
  • Set up and coordinate NMG journalism on social media. This will involve a combination of content drawn from newspapers, websites, and require a promotion of stories that pose questions/debate, teaser for blogs, videos, photos;
  • Drive user engagement including responding to public comments if necessary, in consultation with the Managing Editors and the Editorial Director;
  • Create internal social media awareness within the newsrooms;
  • To lead a team social media moderators in securing and sustaining a credible voice for  NMG’s social media accounts. 
This includes corrections and clarifications to any NMG stories that are in dispute are issued in a timely fashion online.

The Role:
  • To assist the Finance & Reporting manager in ensuring complete, timely and accurate financial data capture for Synovate’s transactions and provide timely & accurate financial reports as required.
  • Directing & coordinating finance related crossfunctional processes so as to minimize cost while enhancing customer service.
  • Ensuring timely production of accurate regular and ad-hoc financial reports in line with Synovate reporting requirements.
  • Controlling and ensuring timely production of annual reports as may be required by stakeholders and comply with law and accounting standards.
  • Ensuring timely efficient and effective management, utilization and control of the company’s assets and financial resources, to maximize all investor/shareholder returns.
  • Developing and maintaining efficient systems to monitor working capital management to ensure that operating activities of the company are optimally funded at reasonable cost and to meet all company requirements and commitments efficiently.
  • Ensuring Synovate’s compliance with necessary legal and statutory financial reporting.
  • Ensuring all financial and control assurance & risk management are in place and lead the development & implementation of governance.
  • Liaising with external auditors for reporting purposes.
  • Provision of team leadership in the finance function
The Person:

To be successful in this role you will have:
  • University Degree
  • Qualified Accountant (CPA (K), ACCA, ACA, ACMA).
  • Extensive business experience (5-7 years) gained at a senior level in a multinational corporate environment
  • Comprehensive financial management knowledge
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines & manage expectations

ISS ( Institute of Security Studies) Senior Researcher, ACPP Nairobi (Eastern Africa) Job in Kenya


The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is an independent and non-profit applied policy research organisation with a focus on human security in Africa.

Its mission is to conceptualize, inform and enhance the security debate on the continent.

The ACPP Nairobi Office aims to undertakes conflict analysis and early warning in Africa with the primary aim of providing timely and indepth analysis as well as developing policy options in support of African and international conflict prevention, management and resolution activities.

Senior Researcher, ACPP Nairobi (Eastern Africa) 

The senior researcher will be responsible for all aspects of primary and secondary research, publish and disseminate output and support ISS partners according to the ISS requirements, reporting, and fulfillment of project deliverables, through publications, briefings presentations and media interaction, etc.

The successful candidate will also assist in guiding and coaching junior researchers and interns, ad hoc assistance to the Programme Head and Office Director in developing project proposals,
continuously identify new information or maintain existing information providers to create an information network.

Requirements:
  • Discipline such as international relations, political science, conflict analysis and resolution, peace studies, diplomacy, strategic and security studies, and or related qualification
  • A minimum of five years relevant applied research experience in the field of peace, conflict and security particularly at the national, sub-regional or regional levels and international organizations
  • Competency in English, French and /or other African Union Languages will be an added advantage.
  • A keen understanding of Africa political dynamics and issues related to human security particularly in the East African region
  • Excellent record of publications and proven written work
  • Excellent analytical research, editing and writing skills
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in a dynamic team environment, and
  • The successful candidate will be required to undertake considerable travel.
The position will be based at the ISS Nairobi Office and the length of the contract will be for two years renewable subject to availability of funding and performance.

ILRI (International Livestock Research Institute) Post Doctoral Scientist Genomics - BecA Job in Nairobi Kenya

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development.

ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

ILRI also manages the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub at ILRI, a new centre for excellence in modern plant and animal biology in Africa. BecA is an initiative developed within the framework of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD)/ African Union African Biosciences initiative. 

It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region. The BecA Hub facilities are world class, including a range of molecular, plant transformation, and genomics laboratories and equipment (e.g. 454 sequencing, Biosafety level 3 laboratory, plant growth facilities). 

The Hub hosts and conducts research in crop, microbe and livestock areas where new developments in science offer promise to address previously intractable problems constraining Africa’s development. Capacity building is a major goal of all activities. 

The scope covers agriculture and food security and their intersections with human health and nutrition, and the sustainable use of Africa’s natural resources.

The BecA Hub seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Scientist- Genomics whose key responsibilities are outlined below. This is an international appointment reporting to the BecA Hub Technology Manager.

Responsibilities 
  • Play a leading role in developing and executing research projects leveraging next generation sequencing technologies;
  • Interact with various scientists in the BecA region and beyond to help design and implement genomics activities;
  • Participate in capacity building through teaching basic and advanced molecular biology and genomics techniques.
Requirements 
  • A PhD degree obtained not more than 5 years ago in the field of Genomics or Molecular biology;
  • Experience in genome sequencing and analysis;
  • Experience with molecular biology, including working knowledge of standard tools for sequence characterization;
  • Experience working in an advanced biotechnology research group;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in a multicultural research environment and as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Experience in any of the following areas will be considered an asset:
  • Knowledge of genome sequencing strategies
  • Solid working knowledge of various bioinformatics packages used for genome data analysis.
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

Terms of appointment: The position is classified as Scientist/Research Level 4A and is on a 2 year term appointment with possibility for renewal for one year, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
